Taejongdae and the ‘Bundeggi’ Bus!

34.jpgThe next morning (Sunday), Alex, Lolita, and I were to go sketching down at Dadaepo beach, having previously arranged to meet up last night. Lolita, being her young and good-looking self, found it no problem to wake up simply for the fact that she never actually went to sleep!!! Me on the other hand, being old, fat, ugly, and extremely hungover found waking up and getting up nigh impossible. However, not one to let people down, I clambered up out of my pit and stumbled into the shower.

We met Alex at around 11am near “1212″ and set off down to Dadaepo. Alex had never been there before so it would be p3020064.jpgsomething different for him. We got there rather quickly and set about strolling down to the waters edge, Alex and Lolita snapping away with their cameras. It was then that stumbled upon our ’subject’ for sketching.

A duck (a drake) had been washed up on the shore and lay there dead beside us. After but a moments hesitation the general consensus was to make that our first sketch of the day. Actually, Lolita had been sketching during the very early hours of the morning (when old, fat, people and most of Korea was busy sleeping) in her small sketch book. Having seen them earlier before leaving I was impressed by what she had done. I have noticed that I always say something like that (Lolita has too) which, sadly, gives her reason to doubt what I say about her work. The problem is, they really ARE that good!! (I was right about the watercolour…)

Anyway, back to the duck…

Lolita started her sketch and quickly set about doing a watercolour while Alex began his own sketch. He then moved on to do several other sketches of the surrounding scenery, playing children, Lolita as she painted, and someone walking along. Now, Alex is a very talented artist too! His work, while different to that of Lolita’s, is very, very, good indeed (as anyone that has seen it will no doubt surely agree). While I am certainly no artist in any shape or form, I do know what I like or what is generally good, and both Lolita and Alex have great ability. They could probably work very well together.

I, too, did a sketch of the dead duck. I spent a fair amount of time upon it but didn’t really capture it. The biggest failing again was the lack of depth with the grades of my pencil and the fact that I didn’t really bring the duck ‘out’ of the picture. Still, Lolita did say that it was an improvement upon my previous attempt (with the grass). During our sketching, several passing Koreans stopped by to exclaim at the sight of the dead duck (it didn’t care) and to stare at what we were drawing. It was very impolite in my opinion but perhaps that was because I was so reluctant to reveal my own amateur efforts to others, particularly when both Lolita and Alex were quite obviously professional! Mine own talents are more suited to the specialised work of cleaning and moving things from point A to point B! Ha!

124.jpgAfter a short time we left the duck to its rest and decided to set off to Taejongdae (태종대) to see the beach there and possibly do some more sketching. It took us far longer than we first thought, but after changing buses twice and enduring marathon long rides through the Busan traffic, we eventually arrived at our destination.

We made the long, up-hill, walk to the lighthouse with Alex and Lolita’s cameras busily at work snapping the pre-Spring scenery, funny Korean couples, and each other (don’t they look 122.jpgcute). Unfortunately, by the time we actually reached the rocks themselves it was getting rather late and we only had time to take some photos there (including the ‘fall’ that Lolita experienced! Alex, nobly, tried to save her and I probably could have… but chose to photograph it instead since I’m mean!).

With Alex having a prior engagement in the evening we needed to get back and so we had to pass up the opportunity to do any more sketching and hike back to civilisation and the bus! 127.jpgEven so, the day was enjoyable and it is highly likely that some other day will see them doing some sketching there.

Here are some more of the photos that Lolita and Alex took during the journey between Busan’s alternative beaches. Oh yes, and tomorrow (Monday) is also Lolita’s first day back at University! Woo-hoo! All the best with that and don’t forget to take your ‘Pooh’ packed-lunch with you. Your classmates will all be envious of you for sure!

Cheers!

Ps. Right now I could really eat some more of that curry you made yesterday!!!
